Chickens are Fun
We have really enjoyed keeping our chickens and they are fun and funny to keep. Chickens can also make an ideal pet for children and you do get the bonus of eggs that are fantastic for breakfast!
Keeping chickens as a hobby also makes you appreciate that chickens have a personality, they come up to you and push you around, or if you get close to them they "cower" down kidding on they are frightened. When you then pick them up they are usually happy to be gently stroked and talked to.
It has also made me appreciate that chickens do have "rights" and we as humans need to make sure that they are well reared and looked after. The current methods of raising chickens by many farmers are neither humane nor correct and I for one have cut down the amount of meat I am eating and have started to buy free range chickens even though they are a bit more expensive.
