Living in the Highlands
One thing is certain, when you travel to the highlands either for a holiday or short visit you will discover that it is totally different to the towns and cities of Scotland. Most of the Scottish Highlands have a sparse population (relative to other built up areas) and you will usually see more sheep than people!
A few months ago we were lucky to see and take some pictures of an otter in the sea near where we live. I also recorded a small video of the otter in the highlands of Scotland.
Living on a Croft in Caithness
We live on a croft, a very small one of 1.25 acres of land, barely big enough to call a croft yet it is a registered croft. Most of the 90 acres that is part of the croft is now rented out for 11 months of the year to another local crofter who raises sheep and beef cattle. Our land is being used for growing vegetable with the aim of being self-sufficient in potatoes, carrots, cabbage, other vegetables and salads by the end of 2009. It is a bit of a challenge as the land we have was used as a stack yard for over 50 years and their is not much soil left - a stack yard is where farmers stacked straw and the ground is fairly compacted. Yet we do have a secret weapon ... read more about our croft.
We have 8 chickens and plan to turn the rest of our land over to horticultural crofts - fruit and vegetables, well at least the ones we can grow Caithness in the north of Scotland.
Ducks came to visit
We arrived back from walking Tibby to find we had been invaded by ducks from the next croft. The ducks wanted to move in with our chickens, and the chickens made it obvious they were not wanted.
